We took this one down to the outer shell. Have you ever stood below grade looking up at the inside of a 100+ year old 3-story house taken down to it’s exterior walls? It’s pretty wild. The homeowners wanted to strike a balance between a modern aesthetic and a more traditional layout. Formal in the front, family in the back, with some physical separation while maintaining a bit of visual connection. Our big move was moving the stair from it’s traditional location at the front of the house to the bay at the side and installing a 3 story cantilever steel structure stair that created a light well and connected all three floors. The home got filled with modern – but timeless furnishings, with the occasional moment of fun (looking at you, robin’s egg blue built-ins).
